"Craving Stress Reduction? De-Stress Don’t Distress"

No matter what your daily routine may be the chances are there will be moments when some form of stress reduction would be a godsend. Even if you’re just going to spend the day at the beach, doing a whole lot of nothing, will you have traffic problems getting there? Will you get a good spot on the beach when you arrive? Did you bring everything you should have i.e. food, drink, sunscreen… the children? Stress is out there lurking – and it’s going to get you!

It has been said that two of the most stressful things you can do in your life are moving house and getting married. I’m sure those of you out there who have given birth will dispute that, but we all have things we could add to the list. Now, as I’m not married, don’t have any children and beach visits are a distant memory, I’ll let you in on a few stress reduction techniques I have used for moving house – which I have done 7 times in the past 17 years. These tips can also be used for any number of stress creating situations.

For anyone who has never bought a house, or moved before, DON’T DO IT, well not without a plan anyway.

I’ve learnt through trial, error, heated exchanges and many sleepless nights that a crucial tool in reducing stress is preparation, preparation, and – you guessed it – preparation. Generally you will know which events in your life that are going to cause you the most stress, so be ready for them.

Let’s use the house example again. When buying a house you know that lawyers will be involved, so be prepared to keep in contact with them in order to make sure everything stays on track. Next you will have to move your possessions, so be prepared to put the majority in storage so you don’t have to move everything on the day, it also means you can move in at a more leisurely pace. Finally, be prepared for it to all go wrong at the last minute, have a backup plan for what you will do if you can’t move in on the day.

The biggest part of your preparation procedure is to make lists – then stick to them.

Now obviously you can’t make a list for everything that might go wrong, but, if you know the processes you will be going through, you can significantly reduce the possibility of things going wrong, and therefore reduce your stress.

The most important thing I’ve learnt is to take some time out to relax, in fact it should be included in your preparations. This relaxation time is essential as it will give you a chance to breathe and clear your head. If you are continually fixated on what is coming you are more likely to stay stressed, miss important details and then end up even more stressed. So, relax, unwind, clear your mind and then return with more focus and higher energy levels.

Still desperate to conquer stress in a hurry? Terrified by the number of chemicals you’re putting into your body just to have a ‘normal’ day?
